train at the end of the world

duration: 2 ½ – 3 hours

We leave the pier by bus to board the Tierra del Fuego train, pulled by a steam locomotive, at the local railway station. This narrow-gauge steam train retraces the old tracks used by the prison inmates who were incarcerated here until 1947, when the last penal colony was shut down. We will cross the Pipo River and Canadon del Toro, as we head into the National Park and visit a small-reconstructed Yamana Indian camp.

We will have time for individual walks and pictures before we return. After the ride, we return to Ushuaia by bus via the lovely Bahia Ensenada.

There is some moderate walking and a few steps at the train station. Please note that the scenery may be considered somewhat barren – the actual train journey is the focal point of this tour.

The stop at La Macarena fall involves 10 minute walk on a hilly uneven ground – 20 steps approx. but guests can remain seated in the train.
